Discarded Pets...A Sign of the Times

Even though I have had conversations about this very subject with several friends lately, it didn't hit home until I saw the headline for the lead story in our local paper. It read, "At Area Shelter, Discarded Pets Are Sign of the Times".   The words "Discarded Pets" broke my heart.  Okay, so I was close to tears but instead of letting them flow, I put on my big girl shoes and decided to do something about it.

Basically, as people find themselves with less discretionary income, and in more serious cases, find themselves unable to keep their homes, the family pets are often simply left at the doors of shelters.  Literally, left in the middle of the night.  It must be heart breaking for the humans but I can't imagine how terrified the pets must be!

As you know, at Laurel Mountain Basket Company we are pet friendly and part of the sale of a couple of our pet products go directly to area animal rescue facilities.  Our Cat Napping catnip pillows benefit "In Honey's Memory" cat rescue in Huntington, MA. and the purchase of a  Spoiled Rotten Dog Gift Basket sends $5.00 to F.A.C.E.S., Inc. the all volunteer dog rescue and adoption service in West Springfield, MA.

In the best of times, animal shelters find it difficult to provide services to all of the "discarded pets" they see.  Today, it's even more difficult.  So, to do our part, from now until the end of the year, in addition to what we already pledge from the Cat Napping pillows and the Spoiled Rotten Dog Gift Baskets, we will donate 10% or our profits from the sale of any of our pet products to one of the local shelters .  Select one of our Pet Gifts or Gift Baskets, your own pet will love it and you will be helping to save a homeless pet.

Shelters don't only need money, they can always use household items.  Laundry detergent, bleach, paper towels, gently used towels and blankets are a few things that are always in short supply.  Office products like copy paper and of course gift certificates to pet supply stores are most welcome!  When you are in the store buying pet food for your pets, why not get a $10.00 gift certificate and send it along to a shelter near you.  A $10.00 bag of food will go a long way.  We also support pet rescue organizations on line.  www.theanimalrescuesite.com is a great site.  I even get a daily e-mail reminder.   At no cost to me, with two clicks of the mouse, I can send a bowl of food to a shelter animal.  The money is donated by the various site sponsors.  How great is that!

We usually think of cats and dogs, but there are other animals in distress.  Horses... imagine, people who can no longer care for their horses.  They simply leave them behind when they move.  Rabbits are abandoned often, especially around Easter time.  Animals can't help themselves they need us.  Please open your hearts.

Days to Remember
