Back To School

Reading and Writing and Trigonometry!
Where did this Summer go?! It seems like we were just going to graduation parties and it's already time to think about getting the kids ready to go back to school.
If you are one of those parents who has an offspring who wants to know WHY they have to go school, you can tell them that the purpose of education is to train the young in society in the knowledge and skills they will need to survive. Besides, in 1642 the Massachusetts Bay Colony made "proper" education compulsory. They can blame the Pilgrims.
Acquiring the knowledge and skills to survive today is a tall order. The world is spinning faster and is far more competitive and complex than it was when many of us were in school, trying to decide what we wanted to be "when we grew up". Personally, I didn't have a clue. My world was small, and my options were few, teacher, nurse, secretary. Today, students are studying in fields that didn't even exist way back then.
I thought it would be fun to see what the jobs of the "future" will be like. Here is where the Bureaus of Labor Statistics predict the job market will improve over for the next ten years (published in 2007). Education Support Services, private sector 79.1%, Home Health Care 69%, Stoftware Publishers 67%, Management, Scientific and Technical Consulting Services 60%, Community Care Facilities for the Elderly 54.8%, Outpatient Care Centers (except mental health and substance abuse) 49.9%, Residential Mental Health and Substance Abuse Facilities 49.9%, Offices of all other Health Practitioners 49.3%. The BLS is not alone in its predictions. Aging Baby Boomers, better medicines, increased cost of child care, and the rapid growth of technology are large contributing factors to this assessment.
So careers as computer programmers, day care providers, elder care specialists, employment specialists, environmental engineers, home health aides, management consultants, networking specialists, physician's assistants and social services coordinators all appear to the jobs of the near future. Something to think about.
