You may know that Sophia Smith founded Smith College in Northampton, MA., but did you know that she also used part of her inheritance to open a school in her hometown of Hatfield? Smith Academy was opened on December 4, 1872.
As my Dad and two aunts did before me, I attended the original Smith Academy with it's 9 classrooms. My 1967 class was the largest to graduate from the original school building. We had 52 members.
During Sophia's lifetime, education for girls was limited. John M. Greene, her pastor, commented that she had a thirst for knowledge and sat on the steps of the town schoolhouse to hear the boys recite their lessons in the hopes that she would also learn.
Today, thanks to women like Sophia Smith, girls as well as boys are able to take advantage of good higher education.
Many of you will have children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews going on to college soon. This year Laurel Mountain Basket Company is introducing our College Survival Program. It's fun and it's easy.
The program consists of three separate gifts that we send directly to your student, a College Survival Kit, a Happy Halloween Kit, and a Final Exam Survival Kit.
One call is all it takes and your student will receive a different fun package from you three times during the semester. For more details or to start your program, call me today at 413-527-1243.
P.S. Sophia's spent almost $400,000 of her inheritance to found Smith College. Isn't that what some tuitions are today! :o)
Happy Back to School!
Marie
